Modì, the first mobile instrument for double - pulse Laser Induced
Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) simultaneous multi - element analysis of
materials.

About the LIBS technique
The LIBS allows to realize chemical analysis on untreated samples.
It is a very versatile elemental technique enabling analysis of very small
amounts of material, 0,1 µg to 1 mg, of solids, liquids or gases
(non conducting and conducting materials), with little or no sample preparation;
moreover LIBS is non invasive, due to very small sampling area. Thanks
to a new methodology (patended CF-FREE software), standard reference
samples or calibrations curves are not necessary.
Principle of LIBS operation
The sample is positioned with the digital microscope, computer-controlled
sample movement.
A high powered (5 to 20 ns) laser pulse (Nd:YAG Laser) is focused on to
a sample surface, to create a plasma.
Emission from the atoms and ions in the plasma plume, is collected by
a lens or fibre optics and analysed by an Echelle Spectrometer and gated
detection (ICCD camera).
Data
analysis: fully integrated PC with software for spectral acquisition and
quantitative standardless LIBS analysis.
The atomic spectral lines can be used to determine elemental composition
or elemental concentrations in the sample.
Emission spectrum is characteristic for each emitting element in the plasma,
which allows qualitative and quantitative multi-elemental analysis.
Emission intensity is proportional to the concentration of the element
in the sample.
LIBS applications
The LIBS technique, for its wide variety of applications, is particularly
suitable for in-situ analysis, monitoring of industrial processes and
environmental diagnostics.
The range of applications include instant analysis of several types samples
materials, as metallurgical, ceramics, polymers, biomedical, biological,
in-vivo medical investigations, forensic, pharmaceutical, environmental,
and so on.
Features:
- Articulated arm gives direct access to the samples for soil and water
analysis
- Broadband Echelle spectrometer gives instant multi-elemental analysis
- LIBS++ software, implementing the CF-LIBS algorithm, gives quantitative
analysis of the samples in few seconds without need for standards or
reference curves
